The Sharp’s Brewery Cask conditioned Ale Doom Bar, is the Flag ship beer of the Barge Inn, John Smiths Bitter, Carling Black Label Lager, Fosters Lager, Stella Artoise and Guinness make up the range of “bright” beer on draught. Review
The modern pub trade is never an easy business, harder still in recent years, especially in rural arrears. It is easy for seasonal visitors to enjoy a well furbished bar during warm weather, enjoying the beer and cider range on offer. The commitment to maintain a consistent, sustained Real Ale Trade as well as a comprehensive “bright” beer range takes resolve and determination to succeed. The well maintained condition of the cellar is reflected by the quality of the Real Ale on offer.
The four Real Ale Building blocks recommend by the Campaign for Real Ale [CAMRA] are;
1. Selling the best quality Independently brewed beer you could
2. Keeping at least one Real Ale available.
3. Offering good service to the local community.
4. Keeping a local drinking pub open for locals.

When this is blended with a home cooked meal service using fresh local produce. Then you easily pass a CAMRA visit.
The Barge, being “dog friendly”, with a car park, can be enjoyed by the passing motorist travelling from Tiverton to the M5 juction or Tiverton to Taunton, people walking along the Great Western Canal and locals alike

The Four in Hand

Tiverton Innquest, Pub Club Tavern Inn Review: The Four in Hand
The Four in Hand, 23 Fore Street, Tiverton.

Beer Range
Three Keg bitters, Trophy, Tetley and Boddingtons, support the established “Real Ale” favourite, Draught Bass. While Blackthorn Keg Cider, with the “Bright Beer” selection of Murphy’s Draught Stout, Stella Artois Lager and Castlemaine XXXX Lager offer a varied choice on draught.
Locally produced “Old Moors” bottled cider joins Newcastle Brown Ale,
Mann’s Brown Ale, Holstein Export Lager, and Beck’s Lager complete the product range available.

Review
An old Licensed Trade saying, “look after your beer and it will look after you”, before the days of Lager and “Bright Beer”, can easily be applied to the Four Hand. The perfect pint of Draught Bass, cask conditioned bitter, should give the customer a choice of a tight knitted creamy head, or a greater laced head, above the clear amber liquid, with a full distinct flavour. A complete knowledge of cellar management, stock control, and bar service, is needed to provide the perfect pint available at The Four in Hand.
This easily explains why the Four in Hand is a “family generations” and community pub with a mix of regulars and passing trade.
